Argos, Brussels

Argos, a Brussels based centre for art and media, is the main institution promoting the audiovisual arts – and artists – in Belgium. Created in 1989, Argos has developed from a distributor of artists' video and film into a broader art centre incorporating also functions as exhibitions, screenings and events, production, conservation and preservation, publishing and the development of a public media library. As an interdisciplinary centre for art and audiovisual media the goal of Argos is to create a production, presentation, distribution, and preservation platform for contemporary Belgian and international audiovisual and visual arts, and more generally all forms of artistic expression moving on the crossing point with the audiovisual media. Anke Buxmann and Maria Palacios Cruz composed a video programme both representative of the Argos distribution catalogue – composed of Belgian as well as international artists - as well as of the Belgian humorous surrealistic tradition. From Nyst’s L’Objet, at the very beginning of the Belgian video art tradition, to a contemporary master of the absurd like Messieurs Delmotte, the videos in this programme appear as joyful and playful solutions to a day of boredom in the artist’s life.
